Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt she had was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay immediately fell in love when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate by means of the medium of art. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with her extended family members living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer and was inspired to create a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage of the home of a juror. In the course of her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. She also started several lifestyles and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective. Autumn Riley is an American actress, best known for American Experience (1997) and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn played Rose in A More Perfect Union, as well as Anna Payne in American Experience.
